“Imagine” by John Lennon (click here to listen)
Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

“Standin’ on the Outside”
This could be a song sung by Jesus just after his baptism in the Jordan by John; sung by a man who had been searching for yeats on the ‘outside’ and who had just had the barriers removed to discover what life was like on the ‘inside’. Then the music makes the shift from minor to major key and oh the joy! The work of the church is to be so available that no one need feel like an outsider. Unfortunately, this has not always been the case, as it is the tendency of religion to erect barriers between the ‘sheep and the goats’, the sinner and the saint, the saved and the damned.
